DIY Giant Ornament Pillow

DIY Giant Ornament Pillow Sewing Tutorial

Every year at Christmas time, you unload boxes and boxes of Christmas decorations that have been stuffed in attics, basements, and closets for the past 11 months. Inside those boxes are buried Christmas treasure. Each year, you open the boxes and are surprised to find items and decorations that you had completely forgot you even had (I know I can relate to that)! Strands of Christmas lights, snowmen snow globes, light-up glitter presents, Merry Christmas wall signs, and tree ornaments litter the floor as you sift through and take inventory of each box. There are so many cute and unique holiday decorations bought new from the store, hand-me-downs, and homemade DIY items.

In this step by step sew-along tutorial, we will be diving into a festive DIY project that’s sure to brighten up your home for the holidays! Continuing with ornaments, this week’s theme on the blog, we’re creating giant ornament pillows.

Materials: ½ yard fleece or other furry fabric (for my pillow I used two different fabrics and used about ¼ yard for each one, totaling ½ ), ¼ yard fur, fiber fill stuffing, pins, scissors, thread.

Pattern

This is the pattern that I drafted to make the ornament pillow. The shape of the pattern is similar to a beach ball. When cutting out the pieces, make sure you out 8 panel pieces to make a round ball.

Begin by sewing the panels, with right sides together. Continue for all 8 panels.

On the last side, leave a large portion of the middle open. This opening allows you to reach your hand in and add the stuffing. Fill the ball with fiber fill until it is the desired width.

Pillow Stuffing
Hand stitch the opening closed. The furrier the fabric, the less noticeable this will look.

Take the rectangle piece and sew the ends together.

Next, staystitch the ribbon in place on separate ends.

Sew the circle onto the top of the rectangle piece, creating a 3D cylinder shape.

Hand sew this top piece onto the ball. This will also help cover up any trouble areas where the panels didn’t quite line up at the ends. Add a little stuffing into the top as you’re hand stitching around it to keep it upright and taunt.
